They say that today’s society is more welcoming to LGBTQ people. That is true to some degree. But what you must be prepared for is that you should not be surprised when you learn that holding hands still turns heads. It can be uncomfortable for sure, yet that is just one of many challenges ahead of you. Let’s talk about how you can overcome them.
Discuss the Sex
Since it’s your first time, you may not be comfortable with all the sexual menus available out there for gay couples. And if you do feel that, give yourself time. It felt uneasy at first because the sensation was totally new for me. And I admit that it was messy! Unless you and your partner are totally prepared for anal sex, you’d better avoid it on your early dates.
Talk About Health History
Men who have sex with other men are more vulnerable to STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections). HIV, human papillomavirus, herpes, gonorrhea, are just some examples of the risks. But this should not be perceived as a threat. Heterosexual relationships have their own diseases too. What you need to do is to be open about your health status and talk about it with your partner, especially before you guys engage in any sexual activity.
Sexual diseases are not a stigma. Encourage positive thoughts if your partner turns out to be having STIs, but still do your best to treat that condition.
Be Careful with Nicknames
There are so many love nicknames in the gay community. Bear, Twink, Twunk, Cub, Daddy, Dilf, Otter, Chub, Gym Rat, and Gym Bunny are just some examples. And if you’re dating a person who’s embraced his sexuality for a long time, you may need to talk to him first about which love name he likes to use. To be safe, just use generic terms like handsome, sexy, or hung, if you’ve just known him.
See If He’s a Violent Person or Not
Domestic violence is not exclusive to heterosexual relationships. It is a serious issue in the gay scene as well. Therefore, before you decide to have a long-term love with anyone, you should know if he displays any signs of violent behaviors. Unfortunately, it will be very difficult to notice them if you’ve met a person only for several times. And this is why you may consider ‘knowing’ your partner first before you start dating him.
