8 LGBT student leaders win Congressional internships
The Gay & Lesbian Victory Institute is proud to announce the third class of the Victory Congressional Internship, a program that provides outstanding undergraduate LGBT leaders with a unique summer experience on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
These eight students, chosen from more than 300 applicants, will spend eight weeks interning on Capitol Hill this summer, engaging in community service projects and attending leadership and professional development trainings. Sign up to learn when the Spring 2013 application becomes available.
The Summer 2012 Victory Congressional Interns are (listed from left to right in picture):
Evan Ross
Representative Richard Hanna
Evan majors in Political Science and minors in Art History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has worked on numerous political campaigns, including the 2010 campaign to reelect U.S. Senator Richard Burr, as well as interning for the Log Cabin Republicans.
Lauren Mitten
House Committee on Appropriations
Lauren is a rising sophomore at Scripps College where she studies Physics and Gender and Women’s Studies. She is a participant in the campus’ ballroom dance company, LGBT organization and food recycling program.
Geoff Corey
Representative Gwen Moore
Geoff is a rising senior at the University at Albany, where he studies Political Science and Public Administration. He does advocacy work on campus surrounding transgender issues, gender neutral housing, and awareness around the FDA ban on gay male blood donations.
Hannah Kapp-Klote
Representative Tammy Baldwin
Hannah is a rising fourth year sociology major at Grinnell College. She is heavily involved in campus activism as well as a tutor for prisoners and a certified legal observer under the Center for Constitutional Rights.
Zenen Jaimes
Senator Robert Menendez
Zenen is a rising senior at Georgetown University studying Science, Technology and International Affairs. He works on local issues on campus as well as raising awareness on immigration issues with the Kino Border Initiative.
Ash Hall
Leader Nancy Pelosi
Ash is a rising senior at the University of Texas at Austin. Ash studies psychology and is active in campus and state LGBT politics, including holding a past internship under Houston Mayor Annise Parker.
Sasanka Jinadasa
Representative Mike Honda
Sasanka is a rising sophomore at Harvard College, concentrating in History and Literature with a secondary in Women, Gender and Sexuality. She is a leader in feminist advocacy on campus and works with the South Asian Association.
Chris Womack
Representative Jared Polis
Chris is a rising junior at East Carolina University studying Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. He is involved with student government, the GLBT student organization and local Native American organization.
