candidates_july2011LaWana Mayfield, an out lesbian running for City Council in Charlotte, N.C., is among four new candidates endorsed by the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund this month.

Charlotte, which has no city ordinances protecting LGBT citizens from discrimination, has also never elected an openly LGBT city council member.

“Charlotte deserves an experienced community leader like LaWana Mayfield–someone who won’t be afraid to speak authentically about what it means to be part of the LGBT community there,” said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Victory Fund.

Also endorsed in July:  Rory Neuner, an out lesbian running for the Lansing, Mich., City Council;  Steve Keblish, an openly gay man running for the Herkimer County, N.Y. Legislature; and Clifford Cunningham, an out gay man running for Chelsea, Mass., City Council.
