hawaiiSome Hawaii activists are split over whether LGBT tourists should skip their state as a form of protest.  Gov. Linda Lingle’s veto of a sweeping civil rights bill passed in the state legislature has angered many, but national groups say they’ll consult with local LGBT leaders about next steps, according to a report in the Christian Science Monitor.

A boycott could damage the state’s hospitality industry, which largely backed the civil unions measure.  ”We wouldn’t want anybody to boycott Hawaii,” said Tambry Young of Citizens for Equal Rights.  But at least one activist the Monitor talked to disagreed.  ”Money talks,” said Mike Golojuch Jr. of PFLAG-Oahu.

Los Angeles-based reporter Karen Ocamb, on her blog LGBT POV, asked, “It is a particular consideration for those in Southern California who pop over to Hawaii for a long weekend, believing it to be a warm, beautiful, welcoming state. How many might reconsider that trip now? Will the romantic sun set over Hawaii for LGBTs?”
