Out elected officials at White House Pride celebration
The White House LGBT Pride reception this evening includes numerous leaders of statewide LGBT groups, some special guests who have been in the national news for the anti-LGBT bias they endured this year, and a number of openly LGBT elected officials from across the country.
Among the out officials scheduled to attend:
Councilman Charles Pugh, president of the Detroit City Council. Charles became the first openly gay elected official in the city of Detroit when he won his seat on the city council in 2009. Because he was the top vote-getter on the council, he also became Council President.
Sen. Christin Kehoe, California State Senate. She’s been elected twice to the state senate from her San Diego district.
Councilwoman Nickie Antonio, a Lakewood, Ohio City Council member who will become Ohio’s first openly gay state legislator. Antonio won her Democratic primary, then her last remaining opponent dropped out of the race.
Councilwoman Rosie Mendez of New York, who’s now running for her second term.
Mayor Evan Low of Campbell, California. He became the nation’s youngest openly gay mayor when he was elected by his peers in December of 2009.
Toni Atkins, a former San Diego City Councilwoman who briefly led the city as acting mayor. Atkins is running for a seat in the California Assembly this year.
