whitehouseFifty percent of Americans would support having an openly gay president in the White House, according to a new 60 minutes/Vanity Fair poll conducted by CBS News. A majority of the random sample of 967 adults also said they would support an openly gay secretary of state or Supreme Court justice.

To date, no openly LGBT person has served in a presidential cabinet nor on the U.S. Supreme Court, though President Obama has appointed more than 100 openly LGBT Americans to posts in his administration, including to a number of senior positions requiring Senate confirmation.

In 2008, a Zogby poll found nearly 70% could support a gay candidate for president if they believed the individual was the most qualified person for the job.
