A Gainesville, Fla. church with a penchant for political theater has turned up the heat in its campaign against openly gay mayoral candidate Craig Lowe. A video out today uses particularly vile language in urging other area churches to join an effort to keep Lowe from winning.
Lowe, a two-term city commissioner, was the top vote-getter in the general election among five candidates. Since no candidate received more than 50% of the vote, the top two finishers are in the April 13 runoff election.
Waymon Hudson, a Florida LGBT activist who blogs at The Bilerico Project, has been following reaction to Lowe’s candidacy. In a post about the video today, Hudson wrote:
The senior pastor of Dove Church, Rev. Terry Jones said all videos put online that feature Pastor Sapp or himself have been endorsed and approved by the Dove World Outreach Center church. The video had originally been posted to youtube, but was removed for violating terms of service. Questions are also being posed to the state about the church’s tax-exempt 501(c)3 status after flagrantly wading into politics.
