Same-sex partner rights available to nearly half the U.S.
About 46% of Americans live in jurisdictions that recognize same-sex couples under law, according to a analysis by Timothy Kincaid on the blog Box Turtle Bulletin.
“So [the National Organization for Marriage] can proclaim ‘victory’ when they have an election in California or Maine, but this ball is rolling and the momentum is in the direction of recognition,” Kincaid writes.
The District of Columbia yesterday became the sixth “state”–and yes, we’re painfully aware D.C. isn’t actually a state–to allow same-sex couples to legally marry. Another five states recognize legal civil unions, and two more recognize out of state same-sex marriages.
