Detroit elects first openly gay city councilmember
Victory Fund candidate Charles Pugh has won his race and will become the first openly gay member of the Detroit City Council. But the political newcomer could also become the city council president if he continues to hold on to the top spot among 18 candidates vying for 9 at-large city council seats.
Pugh, a former radio and TV personality well-known to Detroiters, gained national media attention when he quit his media jobs and threw his hat in the ring for a spot on the council.
