SandraKurt-web1-smallOpenly LGBT candidates across the country are facing a slew of anti-gay attacks in the final days before the Nov. 3 elections.

Annise Parker in Houston, earlier targeted by anonymous persons posing as a Christian group, has now been targeted by a suggestive automated push poll. Jim Llanas in Maplewood, Minnesota has been attacked for his Hispanic heritage through a mailer calling him “non-native,” and suggested that Llanas sought election only to further a kind of gay agenda.   But by far the most egregious attack has come in Akron, Ohio where Sandra Kurt is running for city council.

Just last week, Kurt was targeted by a mailing that decries her as having “no education or experience in government other than political activism for special rights for homosexuals,” and slanders the Stonewall name itself:

These Stonewall groups celebrate the Stonewall riots in New York City in 1969 where homosexual activists assaulted and seriously injured police officers who were attempting to serve a lawful warrant at the Stonewall Inn, which was a well known homosexual brothel that entertained members of the mafia and served alcohol to children.

The mailer includes a listing of the “Goals of the homosexual movement,” such as:

- Sensor speech against homosexuality (e.g.. criminalize reading bible passages in church that condemn homosexual behavior)

- Prohibit insurance coverage for therapy to repair their deviant lifestyles

- Require schools to teach children that homosexual behavior is natural and acceptable.

- Reverse the immigration ban on individuals with AIDES. [sic]

The flier, which was signed “A concerned neighbor,” was mailed with only a few weeks left in the election.

Kurt, who has been endorsed by the Akron Beacon Journal, is an eminently qualified candidate. She is the President of the Summit County Stonewall Democrats, and Vice-President of Stonewall Akron. She has worked with local city officials, including the city council, to help pass a fully inclusive non-discrimination law. For this, Kurt has been honored by the Summit County Democratic Party with its Distinguished Service Award.
