Openly gay Congressman Jared Polis (D-CO) has accepted an appointment to the Air Force Academy’s Board of Visitors, according to the Associated Press. Polis became the first openly gay man elected to Congress as a non-incumbent this past November. The Board of Visitors reports on the affairs of the Air Force Academy to Congress and the Pentagon.
Polis opposes the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which has lead to the discharge of more than 300 openly gay servicemembers since President Obama’s inauguration. Still, Polis says he doesn’t plan to use this post as a platform to change the policy, which is mandated by law.
