jolieState Sen. Jolie Justus, who represents parts of Kansas City in the Missouri State Senate, was married to her partner, Shonda Garrison, in Iowa this weekend.

The Kansas City Star reported:

Justus, 38, said Friday was one of the best days of her life, but it also was bittersweet because the marriage carries no legal weight in Missouri.

“We felt, though, that it was important that we be able to make that commitment to each other. My hope is that someday marriage will be recognized by Missouri and federally.”

In 2004, Missouri voters approved a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
