Colorado students elect openly gay leaders

After a campus controversy involving student fee funding of a coming out day project, students at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs have elected an openly gay student body president and vice president, an outcome one student called “amazing” and “historical.” Daniel Garcia was elected president and James Burge was elected vice president.
The election came after the student body government voted to impeach the sitting president and vice-president, who had refused to sign off on the allocation of funds sought by the LGBT student group, “Spectrum.” Then student body president David Williams cited his own personal beliefs in his refusal to approve the funding of an observance for coming out day, according to The Gazette, a Colorado Springs paper.
