Paper applauds Polis for work on behalf of gay Iraqis
An editorial in the Denver Post lauded openly gay Rep. Jared Polis for his recent investigation into the murder of gays in Iraq. Recent reports suggest an increase in murders of openly gay men, and even those suspected of being gay, with more than 25 men and boys said to have been killed in recent weeks.
Polis toured Iraq last week and reported on his findings in a letter to the State Department. ”We will see whether the Iraqi government is serious about protecting the human rights of all Iraqis, and we can also see what role our own State Department can play in helping to protect this minority in Iraq,” Polis told a Post reporter.
The International Gay & Lesbian Human Rights Commission has asked the United Nations to open a special investigation of the situation facing LGBT Iraqis.
