Republican candidate for California governor supports Prop 8, civil unions
Former Ebay executive Meg Whitman has announced her candidacy for this year’s gubernatorial race in California. The announcement came with a broad outline of her positions on several issues, among them marriage equality. Some voters may be put off by her support of Proposition 8, which banned marriage between same-sex couples in California last November. She explains her support as a “matter of personal conscience and my faith”. Despite this, the conservative candidate has voiced support for other issues facing the LGBT community.
But Whitman, a Presbyterian who supports gay civil unions, said the thousands of same-sex marriages that took place last year before the ban should be legally recognized — a sentiment opposed by many Proposition 8 backers. Moreover, she said, gay and lesbian couples should be able to adopt children.
