Local newspapers endorse Coleman Prewitt
In advance of tomorrow’s general election, Florida newspapers the Miami Herald and the Sun Sentinel officially endorsed Coleman Prewitt for city commission. More information on Prewitt, a Victory Fund endorsee, can be found here .
The Miami Herald writes:
All four candidates understand these district traits, to their credit. Of the four, Mr. Prewitt stands out — and is our choice. He has been involved in the city’s effort to reform its building code, which would address protecting neighborhood character from incompatible new development. As a member of the Downtown Fort Lauderdale Civic Association he has organized crime walks and sought better lighting for Riverwalk.
Mr. Prewitt supports more smart growth (as in vertical) in the downtown area, but he wants to slow beach growth with an eye toward future projects that are more pedestrian- and eco-friendly. Mr. Prewitt wants the city to do a better job of growing its key industries: tourism and marine businesses.
For Fort Lauderdale City Commission District 4, The Miami Herald recommends COLEMAN PREWITT.
The Sun Sentinel writes:
Coleman Prewitt, the Editorial Board’s choice in District 4, wants to streamline the building department to make it more efficient. Coleman, a 41-year-old attorney, also wants the city to be well-situated for economic development when funds become available. He also wants the city to address what he sees as a morale problem in the police department.
Prewitt is intent on maintaining the level of service in the city without increasing taxes, and wants to enhance Fort Lauderdale’s image as one of a cosmopolitan city. He wants to work closely with county officials to address the problem of homelessness, and wants to improve police protection downtown and in the Las Olas area.
