City Controller Annise Parker announced her candidacy for mayor of Houston today. Parker, who is an open lesbian, has held public office in the city for more than 10 years, including three terms on the Houston City Council.

While on the City Council, Annise staunchly advocated for LGBT civil equality, from fighting the repeal of Houston’s non-discrimination policy to campaigning against the Texas’ anti-marriage equality amendment.

Now, she promises to serve Houston as a leader with her experience as a strong financial decision maker.

“Houstonians want a mayor who can lead the city through tough economic times, and a mayor who can continue our forward progress with jobs and neighborhoods,” she told The Houston Chronicle. “I have the skill set to do these things.”
