Kate Brown will become the next secretary of state in Oregon, making her the second-highest ranking official in the state. Brown battled through a competitive Democratic primary and a general election to win the post.

Upon her victory, Brown thanked the Victory Fund for its support.

She said:

“The early and significant support I received from the Victory Fund provided the foundation I needed to run a strong winning primary campaign and positioned me for a successful election this fall.  In addition, all the individual Victory Fund members from across the country who gave to my campaign – from $5 to thousands of dollars – were a tremendous base of support, both financially and personally.  It was amazing to know there were so many people across the country who cared about my race.”

The Oregonian writes:

She waged a relatively low-key campaign in the fall against Dancer, who raised enough money to appear frequently in television ads.

Brown was the better-known candidate statewide, but Dancer was well-known in the Eugene area, where he was a longtime TV news anchorman.

The two candidates differed on whether Oregon should remain one of a handful of states with no limits on campaign contributions. Brown said she would support a constitutional amendment to impose limits, while Dancer said he would remain neutral, leaving it to voters to decide.

They also differed over Measure 65, which was being rejected by an almost 2-tio-1 margin. Brown opposed and Dancer supported the measure, which would have ended partisan primary elections in Oregon and replaced them with a system in which all candidates for a political office would appear on the same ballot and all voters could vote for one of them.
