Heather Carruthers won a seat on the Monroe County Commission, getting 63 percent of the vote. She defeated two opponents Carlos Rojas and Sloan Bashinsky.

Heather is the co-owner of Pearl’s Rainbow, the premiere resort for lesbians and gay-friendly women.  Previously, she was also the co-chair of PrideFest Key West, former chair of the Lodging Association of the Florida Keys, a graduate of Leadership Monroe County and their 2006 Leader of the Year, and the first female president of the Key West Business Guild, a GLBT chamber of commerce.

Heather is the first LGBT individual to be serve the Monroe County government.
