A poll by the University of Arkansas revealed that 53 percent of the state’s residents oppose a ban on adoption by gays and lesbians. Only 38 percent of respondents supported Arkansas Proposed Initiative Act 1, which would prevent couples who aren’t married from adopting or fostering children, while 7 percent remained unsure.

Despite the poll, both sides are fighting to persuade voters, including the right-wing Familiy Council. Openly gay Arkansas Rep. Kathy Webb, a Victory Fund endorsee, refuted claims by Family Council President Jerry Cox that the ban’s defeat would advance what he called the “gay agenda.

“[For Cox ] to make those claims is outrageous,” Webb said. “It is a fact we have a lot of children who need good homes. What the [Family ] Council is saying is hate mongering.”
