Puerto Rico denies constitutional marriage ban
The Puerto Rican House of Representatives effectively killed a constitutional ban on marriage equality for this legislative session.
The Associated Press reports that Resolution 99 failed to make it to the House floor on Thursday. The bill would have amended the territory’s constitution to establish that marriage is between a man and a woman. Therefore, the resolution’s passage would have made it harder to allow civil unions or give benefits to same-sex partners.
Opponents of the amendment claimed it was both discriminatory and unnecessary since local laws already ban marriage equality.
