In an article published today, Detroit News columnist Deb Price discussed the plight of Korab Zuka, an LGBT activist in Kosovo who received death threats after founding a gay rights group in 2005. After police ignored his pleas for help, Zuka successfully applied for political asylum in the United States.

“I hope that Kosovo will change. And that will be with the help of the U.S. serving as a role model — and not only for Kosovo, but for many countries,” he said.

According to Price, Zuka’s plea for the international tolerance of gay people coincides with openly gay former ambassadors James Hormel and Michael Guest’s Foreign Policy Project that hopes to get the State Department to work harder to reduce anti-gay abuses abroad.

“Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness: Just like their heterosexual friends and neighbors, gay people in every corner of the globe ought to enjoy those fundamental freedoms. And Uncle Sam should say so at every opportunity,” Price wrote.

Meanwhile, Family Research Council’s Peter Spriggs still thinks that the United States should be shipping more gay people overseas.
