Hans, you (like the Log Cabin Republicans) have once again repeated a complete revisionist version of what Ronald Reagan did and didn't do, said and didn't say, in his letter denouncing Proposition 6 (known as the "Briggs Initiative") in 1978.

In "the letter" that you and the LCR tout Reagan's concern with Proposition 6 was not that it would negatively affect gay teachers but that it would be used by embittered students, parents, fellow teachers or administrators to ruin the careers of "innocent" straight teachers (with whom they are in conflict) by making "scurrilous" "accusations" of homosexuality. THAT is why Governor Reagan wrote the letter and why he opposed the Brigg’s Initiative.

Believe it or not, the Log Cabin website used to have the quote where Reagan made this statement proudly displayed on the "Republican Heroes" section of their website. Strangely enough, when I (a former Republican and LCR member) pointed out how such a statement and such a stand against Proposition 6 HARDLY made Reagan a hero to gay people, the quote was quietly removed.

It's time that we stop repeating the fallacy that Reagan's stand and statement against Prop 6 had ANYTHING to do with his concern for gay people.

This reminds me of people who make public statements against anti-gay marriage amendments ONLY because they might negatively affect "innocent" straight couples.

I expect this sort of delusional thinking from the LCR; I've seen it from the inside. But I would hope that others would avoid spreading misinformation that makes a gay hero out of a man who was a friend to gay individuals but hypocritically not a friend to the gay community.
